Scooping once or twice a day is the baseline, not the whole solution. If the box still smells within a few hours of cleaning, the problem usually isn't your scooping schedule — it's what's happening to the litter and the box between scoops.
Where the smell actually comes from
Ammonia builds up from urine that's sitting in unscooped clumps or soaking into litter that's stopped absorbing well. Even a litter box scooped daily can smell if the litter underneath the surface is saturated, or if the box itself has absorbed odor into scratches in the plastic over time.
What actually helps beyond scooping
- Scoop clumps and solids at least once a day, twice if you have multiple cats sharing a box.
- Do a full litter change on a schedule — even clumping litter needs a complete refresh every 2 to 4 weeks, not just top-offs.
- Wash the box itself with mild soap during full changes. Plastic holds onto odor-causing bacteria that scooping never reaches.
- One box per cat, plus one extra, is the standard rule — too few boxes means more waste concentrated in one place.
- Keep the box somewhere with airflow. A litter box tucked into a closed closet traps odor that would otherwise dissipate.
Why the scooping tool itself matters
A scoop with widely spaced or flimsy tines leaves small clumps behind, which is often the real reason a "just scooped" box still smells an hour later. A sturdy, properly spaced scoop catches what a cheap one misses, and a stand or holder keeps it (and any residue) off the floor between uses instead of leaning against the wall.

- Litter feels damp or heavy throughout, not just where your cat goes.
- Clumps are breaking apart instead of holding together when you scoop them.
