If your dog turns into a puddle of calm the moment they get a frozen treat to lick, that's not a coincidence — licking is a self-soothing behavior built into dogs and cats, and it's one of the few tools that reliably works during the moments they dread most.
Why licking calms pets down
Licking triggers a mild, repetitive motion that lowers heart rate, similar to how a person might take slow breaths to calm down. Trainers and vets use this on purpose: a lick mat spread with something the pet likes gives them a job to focus on instead of the stressful thing happening around them.
When it actually helps
- Bath time. Suction the mat to the tub or shower wall at nose height so they're focused on licking, not on the water.
- Nail trims and grooming. Give a helper the mat to hold while you trim, so the pet has something else to concentrate on.
- Vet visits. A smear of something familiar on the mat in the waiting room or exam table can take the edge off.
- Being left alone. A frozen mat before you leave the house gives an anxious dog something to work on right as the stressful part starts.
What to put on it
Plain wet food, plain yogurt (no xylitol), mashed pumpkin, or a thin layer of peanut butter (check the label for xylitol first — it's toxic to dogs) all work. Spread it thin into the ridges rather than piling it on, and freeze it beforehand for something that lasts longer during high-stress moments like being left alone.

A quick note
